I have spent some time writing and creating this isometric engine. This engine is based on some techniques used in the PC game Syndicate, which I wrote in 1993

The technique is simple and extremely fast, well suited to Flash and will run fast on most machines.

The demo says everything so please try it. It may take a while to load as it is 470kb. Cursor keys to move around! Try running it in a large window, even at 1920x1200 it stills maintains a great framerate.
